cheaper than the store (23 July 2010)
Brand new and about $20 off retail. I would buy more games from this seller, especially with new releases, shipped within a couple days. A+ service

Great follow up to one one of the best SciFi RPGs on the PC (20 July 2010)
The good: Great improvement on the game-play (more like a First Person Shooter than in Mass Effect 1), Great and epic story that is enhanced when you help your team mates face their personal issues. The required exploration can sometimes get tedious, but can turn up some good surprises.

Great music, as well as presentation. Graphics has been improved over the original and fewer graphical glitches.

RPG elements have been reduced considerable compared to the original (personally I prefer the changes made). You spend less time moving weapons and their enhancements around, you don't have to worry about what amour to outfit your team mates with and there are less abilities to allocate skill point to. In my opinion, this makes the game-play more focused as well as each team mate more appropriate for specific tasks.

If possible, please play Mass Effect 1 and import your saved game into Mass Effect 2; it makes the experience more fulfilling.

The Bad and the Ugly: (why the 4 stars on the fun side of the game).... there were random crashes especially when I was attempting to assign abilities to short cut keys. Sometimes my character would get stuck above the environments or within walls while exploring, this however should not discourage anyone who is considering this game.

I will highly recommend it for anyone who likes First Person Shooters but is weary of the whole RPG thing; this is a very tame RPG and would appeal to anyone who is new to RPGs.

Disappointing downgrade from MassEffect 1 (18 July 2010)
Mass Effect 1 had an overall general better experience. Gone in 2 are kneeling with sniper rifle to steady it, driving of vehicles, ability to really know how different weapons compare, ease of galaxy navigation, etc. It's as if they threw away everything and started over instead of building on what they had. And if you try to replay it, you're forced to watch the entire cinematic portion again, which goes on and on and on.

Bigger, better, meaner and leaner than ME1 (13 July 2010)
I am someone who first finished ME1 and than immediately played ME2 with the orginal Shephard imported over. Intially I was put off by the tonning down of the rpg elements, the complete overhaul of loot/inventory system as well as the combat system. Overtime the more I played ME2 the more I realized it was done for the better. The orginal ME1 had in my view a bloated loot/inventory system with mobs dropping too many things to keep track off and money really mean't nothing as almost any item of significance came from drops. The talents trees in the original also felt too redundant and not specific enough which was also addressed in ME2 and the talents now gives you fewer but more powerful meaningful abilities. In all I now agree with the overhaul the game mechanics went from ME1 to ME2.

Mass Effect 2 with its save-the-universe plot, its conversation options, tightly knit high quality cut-scenes, and a more robust combat system truly makes the game feel like an interactive sci-fi movie. I will say games like ME2 given 4-5 years more and subsequent advancements in computer hardware/software technologies will make movies eventually obsolete. Why watch a movie when you can virtually star in it controlling the actions as well as story-line than rather watch someone else do it for you.

In all the game is bigger in scope in almost every way from ME1 including the climatic finale at Omega 4 relay. I literally couldnt put the game away once I started the final mission all the way to its ending. I don't agree with others that it didnt match the scope of the orginal. In my view it exceeded the orginal game ending in almost all aspects; graphically, plot wise and had lot more emotional trappings to the mission which will make you regret or ponder at some of the choices you made during the finale; in all the finale is lot more involved than the orginal. (*SPOILER* if you are dont carefully think over how you allocate your team members for the final mission you might end losing some really valuable members which actaully had me play the ending thrice to undo some of the choices I intially made.)

In a nut-shell highly recomended. ME2 just like a true hollywood blockbuster sequel is bigger in almost all aspects from the orginal and I am really looking forward to ME3.

Disappointed... could have been much better (13 July 2010)
Mass Effect 2 is a good game, however, it is not an excellent game by any means. There are too many faults with the game that ruins the consistency that the original had.

The story starts out strong and then as soon as you become a recruitment officer things go bad all the way to plain boring. Practically the whole game you have to do these missions, which is the story progression, where you recruit more members for the team and then complete their loyalty missions so they become more useful in battle. In most cases if you had to visit a planet it will either be for recruiting someone for your roster or revisiting it for their loyalty mission. All the side quests add absolutely nothing to the storyline which isn't really a bad thing since there really isn't much of a storyline in this game to begin with. There is no villain like Saren (Mass Effect) who shows up consistently challenging you and has a background story and has a deep tie to the story like in the original Mass Effect. All you get now is a generic Collector/Reaper/Prothean entity who takes possession of random enemies and is too afraid of meeting you personally.

There are only two good instances in the entire game which is the start and the final mission. Everything in between is filler that is all focused on you recruiting allies and doing loyalty missions. As far as planet exploration is concerned you get a tedious mining scanner that works through the galaxy map that has you scanning planets manually for its natural resources so you can research new upgrades. Also you cannot explore planets freely with the rover from the first game, this game has you going through more linear content than the first with a new shuttle that lands directly at the area of importance on the planet.

If there are any redeeming qualities with Mass Effect 2 I can only think of a few characters that actually have an interesting plotline that keeps my attention, otherwise the rest all involve dysfunctional family members that have finally lost it. The shooter gameplay is fun but does get a bit repetitive which I don't mind. All the main decisions from the original do get carried over which is a nice touch and does change the story a bit if you port your old Shepard. Graphics are much improved from the original which was surprising at first but it still looks like the good old Mass Effect universe with all the diversity of the alien species. Music is average from what I've heard, though I still like the main theme better in the original than the main theme from this game.

I still feel disappointed with the easily forgettable storyline in this game compared to the original which had an ending that was more epic than the finale of Mass Effect 2. I would still recommend Mass Effect 2, but don't have any high expectations for this entry in the series.
