Square Enix does not make games like this anymore. Why hate on eight? (12 July 2010)Final Fantasy 8 is shunned by most final fantasy fans. It does not have a memorable story as Final Fantasy VII, but it is entertaining. First off it uses Guardian Forces (GFs) which level up and become powerful. It is wise to use one per character, so they become fond of the character making them more powerful. It also has unique weapons and an unlimited magic system. Now for the bad you have to draw magic from enemies and can only hold 99 of a certain spell and i think a total of 40 different spells. It may sound good, but when you get to the middle of the game you can't hold more spells. The limits are random, some people say press circle whole your life is critical, but i find it hard to use. Overall the game is fun, the story is about love, betrayal and saving the world. FF VIII is a fun game and deserves to be played by any Final Fantasy fan or RPGer. FFVIII Redeemed (07 July 2010)I was that 16 year old kid who loathed Final Fantasy VIII (when it was originally released) for every reason that made it unlike Final Fantasy VII. I still prefer VII in nearly every regard, but recently I purchased VIII to play on my PS3 and PSP. I've finally gotten around to playing it thanks to this wonderful recession (read: I'm now unemployed) and have put nearly 70 hours into the game in a week and a half. The story is relatively mundane: evil sorceress turns out to not be all that bad, but another evil sorceress is actually evil. The foreshadowing phones in all of the supposed twists and turns, but that's okay. The characters are fully realized and have depth and emotion, but when it comes to battle you really don't need to use any of the females because all of their limit breaks are worthless when compared to Squall, Zell and Irvine (Quistis' limit breaks are occasionally useful). The junction system is wonderfully complex, but when you have figured it out in conjunction with Triple Triad (a card mini-game) then FFVIII becomes too easy. Seriously. I'm on disc three and none of my characters are over level 25 and I'm not even trying to do a low level game. The battle system discourages leveling up which is in stark contrast to FFVII where I fought tooth and nail to get all of my characters to level 99 before the end of the first disc (for story related reasons I wanted to be a completionist to the nth degree). TANGENT! back to FFVIII. Not only does this game discourage leveling up, it discourages using magic, using guardian forces (in battle)... This game discourages playing it as though it were any other Final Fantasy. I love it. The short of it: Intimidatingly complex junction system gives way to a joyously refined magic and battle system once you get passed the learning curve. The graphics are great for the PSX (PSone for you noobs), the story is a little weak, the characters are worthwhile and the sheer amount of things to do in the game is great. To all of those used-to-be-16's who formerly hated this game: give it another shot, it may not be as good as FFVII or Xenogears, but it's definitely a worthwhile adventure. It's certainly better than 90% of the RPG's available for the current generation of consoles. Best game of all time , still. (11 June 2010)Final Fantasy 8 in my opinion is the best game ever made, and thats a big claim to fulfull. FF8 is just so remarkable for the gaming industry. it is a PS1 game, but does such an incredibile job that it wont matter that its on the PS1. for the ps1 generation, the graphics were out of this world. FF8 has a very deep story line that you will fall in love with. the story revolves around Squall, a SeeD - a elite-mercenary from a military force known as Balamb Garden. SeeD is a group of solders started by Balamb Garden to rid the world of evil. And thats exactly what you do. You and 5 other companions go on various missions to save the world. this game is a 4 disc set, so the game is very long and is worth playing. Final Fantasy VIII Review (10 June 2010)This is one of the best RPG ever. Great Story, Great Battle System, Great Leveling System, Great Buy. Story: Squall is a trainee at Balamb Garden, a facility for a mercenary group named SeeD. After graduating, Squall is given his first mission, to help a out a small rebel force, take over a town known as Timber from the great and mighty Galbadian Empire. Little does he know, he would embark on an epic story to learn the past, save the world, and save his love. |
